The current US government is in need of reform. One way to start achieving this is to reform campaigning policies, possibly starting with a capped amount of money to be spent on any campaign for any respective public office held. What do you think should be the necessary components requiring funding for a level campaign playing field?
Make mass media ads illegal for campaigning. Candidates should travel from city to city, campaigning face to face with citizens and be available for questioning by voters. Like the good ole’ days.
Might make it overly hard for candidates that are not part of an organization to get their name and message out. Without organized support even candidates with lots of money would have a hard time becoming a house hold name.
I think that both of you have made excellent points. I agree that ads should be banned. I also agree that the logistics of “becoming a household name” require some kind of mass media exposure in order to be effective.
The real problem is when a presidental candidate is expected to have raised at least $100 million a year and a half before the election to be considered. How do you take anyone or any organization at their word at that level of spending. Will they really do a good job spending our tax money? The amazing part is we put up with this behavior from our officials.
I think that the level of transparency for any expenditures that involve campaign funds would definitely have to be addressed for anything to be effective.
